At a time when her income was curtailed, a student of Christian Science needed to meet a large household expense in just a few days. Through her study of the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, she was beginning to sense the ever-presence of God's care and protection. So it was natural that her thoughts should turn to the Lord's Prayer and its spiritual interpretation, found on pages 16 and 17 of the textbook, especially the lines:
"Give us this day our daily bread;
Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections."
The correlation of grace and supply stood out to her as never before. It became clear that the primary need was not material income, but spiritual growth, a more expansive sense of divine grace in human affairs. Suddenly a recent incident was recalled in which she had been ungracious to another member of the family, rebuking him with bitter sarcasm. The belief had been accepted that sarcastic remarks were characteristic of certain members of this family.
