"BECOME AS LITTLE CHILDREN"

From the February 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science teaches that we can put off the qualities opposed to Spirit, God, through pure, childlike trust in God's ever-presence. When we acknowledge man's inseparable relationship to God, we place ourselves in a position to understand our individual being as the reflection of the one perfect God.

When a child returns home after school and asks his mother for a piece of bread, it would be a rarity if he were to ask as well for a piece of bread for the next day. He has implicit trust in his mother's ability to satisfy his daily needs. It would never occur to him that his mother or father could not or would not give him everything he needs. Likewise, children, before they have been indoctrinated with false education, innately manifest trust in God, good.

The childlike thought accepts the truth more quickly than does the adult thought, because it is inherently less skeptical and has more faith in good. Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 236), "While age is halting between two opinions or battling with false beliefs, youth makes easy and rapid strides towards Truth." The child heart is tractable, teachable. It is receptive and expectant. It never grows old, never diminishes in vigor. The child heart is a wellspring of energy and enthusiasm that never runs dry. The burdens of regret, old memories, and sad retrospection cannot touch the child heart, for it is at one with God, good.
