MAN IS NOT A COMPUTER

From the February 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The line between metaphysics and physics is becoming sharper every day. An understanding of Christian Science depends upon a clear differentiation of the two. According to this Science, one is real; the other is unreal. There is no intermingling, no blending, and no compromise between metaphysics and physics.

The sharpening of the line is coming through advances made in studies of the physical universe. These advances are forcing us to rise out of mere belief in Christian Science into an understanding of it. No longer can we rest in the theory that matter exists, although Spirit is supreme. We must rise to the realization that Spirit is All and that matter is nothing but the dream of mortal mind.

If we have reasoned that man is spiritual but that material personality is real, we may have found comfort in the assertion that matter could never perform the functions of mind—seeing in this assertion the proof that mentally intelligent man could not possibly have evolved from material force. But physics now demonstrates that a machine, an electronic computer, can perform many seemingly mental functions, including that of composing music.
