Since my early teens, Christian Science has supplied the answers to all my problems. It has healed me of many physical ailments, brought me solace in sorrow, been a constant source of comfort and guidance, sweetened all my relationships, strengthened and enriched all my capacities, and increased my opportunities.
The most inspiring healing to me has been the gradual transformation of my character and disposition which has been taking place over the years. I know that only the Christ at work in human consciousness could have rid it of unpleasant traits to such a great extent. Foolish fears, much vanity, false pride and prejudice, self-will, self-justification, and mental laziness are disappearing as I am gaining a better understanding of God and of man. A growing freedom from self-condemnation and self-pity has come with the added spiritual growth.
The physical healing that stands out most clearly in my thought is that of a severe nervous breakdown, which came soon after my college years. There were a number of weeks when everything seemed dark, and I was full of fear. It was impossible for me even to sit up or to hold a book to read. My mother gave me constant, loving care, both day and night, throughout this period, and a Christian Science practitioner prayed faithfully for me. When I was able to sit up and read a little for myself each day, I was greatly distressed over my inability to understand everything I read in the textbook by Mrs. Eddy.
