In 1945 a dear friend in whose presence I said that I should like to be freed from selfishness handed me the Christian Science textbook by Mrs. Eddy. I opened it and read these words (p. 242): "In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error,—self-will, self-justification, and self-love,—which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death." I decided that in the future this book should point out the way to me, and I felt that I would rather have it than all the world's goods.
At the time I was feeling considerable fear and resentment with respect to the malevolence of a certain individual who threatened my life. The fear was so great that my heart was affected. However, I now turned humbly to God and learned the necessity of loving one's enemies by seeing them as in reality the spiritual ideas of God, divine Love. This was my salvation. To the extent that I loved, to that extent fear vanished, and my heart became normal.
Subsequently I experienced many other healings and blessings through Christian Science. The healing of shingles, with which my daughter was afflicted, made a great impression on me. It was a serious condition, but was healed in one treatment through the prayers of a Christian Science practitioner. My son was healed of boils and of a swollen throat by this wonderful way of Life.
