Why do Christian Scientists express their gratitude to God for the life-work of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science? Because they have been so greatly blessed by her teachings. Their gratitude is not one of personal adulation. Christian Scientists do not worship Mrs. Eddy. But they do sincerely respect her pure and unselfed devotion to God and to His Christ, the divine ideal. They gratefully and honestly acknowledge her spiritually inspired interpretation of the Master's teachings and the reinstatement of his works.
Christ Jesus insisted (John 5:30), "I can of mine own self do nothing." He also said it was a mistake for others to call him good, since none was good but God. Similarly, Mrs. Eddy made plain to her followers that they must learn to find her in her writings and not in her person. She abhorred the deification of personality.
One illustration of this is found in the events which took place during a two-year period between 1887 and 1889, events which must have convinced her of the need for deliberate withdrawal of her person from direct participation in the activities of her Church.
