NO BARRIERS IN MIND

From the March 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some years ago, my family and I boarded a self-operating elevator and proceeded to follow the instructions for its proper operation. The elevator went into motion, and everything worked smoothly until it came to a halt in front of a brick wall. Immediately we turned to the instructions and went over them carefully, finding that we had obediently followed them.

Turning our thoughts to God for direction, we recalled a statement made by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." We knew that the evidence or proof of divine Love's ever-presence and willingness to meet our need could be found in accepting and following divine direction.

While contemplating these thoughts, I was guided to look away from the wall, and as I did so, a ray of light caught my eye. In turning toward it, I began to laugh, for there right behind us was the exit from the elevator. Unlike most elevators, this one had to be departed from in the opposite direction from which it was boarded. We had been so engrossed with looking at the barrier or wall that we had been unable to see that the way out had always been available.
