"Matrimony, which was once a fixed fact among us, must lose its present slippery footing, and man must find permanence and peace in a more spiritual adherence." So writes Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 65) .
The remedy for marital instability and insecurity is, then, to be found in fidelity to spiritual demands, which rebuke the lawless tendencies of the carnal, mortal mind and enforce the divine statutes of Love. Unselfish love, based on divine Love, God, is the stabilizer, beautifier, and strengthener of the marital contract. Such love is the conqueror of deceit, the elevator of thought above the unworthy, the guardian of the treasures of affection, the guarantor of happiness, the very basis of harmony. Truly considered, marriage is moral and spiritual unity.
In "Miscellaneous Writings," Mrs. Eddy has given a beautiful definition of "matrimony" and has indicated the possibility of its attainment in these words (p. 286): "We look to future generations for ability to comply with absolute Science, when marriage shall be found to be man's oneness with God,—the unity of eternal Love."
