Some years ago I was working in an office the first three days of each week, and my mother, also a student of Christian Science, was taking care of my two children. When I arrived home one Wednesday afternoon, Mother said she thought I should call a practitioner to help my elder daughter, who was complaining of pain in her leg.
Thursday morning I was at home. When the child wakened and came downstairs she was very ill. Her leg appeared to be useless, and she wanted only to lie across a chair and cry. I realized suddenly that this complaint was more serious than I had supposed, and I immediately telephoned a practitioner in another city, asking her for help through prayer. The practitioner confidently assured me of God's presence and power and said she would begin to give the child treatment immediately.
When I had replaced the receiver, I took up the Bible and also Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and began to study to overcome my fear. I felt I could leave the child to the understanding love of the practitioner, but that I must overcome the fear in my own thinking. I spent the rest of the day, and the next day, in prayer and study. When I found it necessary to leave my books to prepare meals or wash dishes, I propped the Christian Science Hymnal up before me and sang. I filled my thought so full of Truth and Love that fear had no place.
