THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING TESTIMONIES

From the April 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every Wednesday in Christian Science churches around the world many people are impelled to rise from their seats to testify to lives regenerated, harmony and progress manifested, and health restored through the understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him as taught in Christian Science.

Mrs. Eddy provided that The Mother Church and every branch Church of Christ, Scientist, should hold a testimony meeting every Wednesday. In the Manual of The Mother Church, she tells us (Art. VIII, Sect. 24): "Testimony in regard to the healing of the sick is highly important. More than a mere rehearsal of blessings, it scales the pinnacle of praise and illustrates the demonstration of Christ, 'who healeth all thy diseases' (Psalm 103:3)."

Mrs. Eddy's declaration is fully in accord with Scriptural commands to give public thanks to God. The Psalmist sang (Ps. 22:22), "I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee." Yet there are still students of Christian Science who find it difficult to give testimonies in church. They are held back by the belief that they have nothing to testify to or that their experiences are not significant enough; that they are unworthy and that by testifying they may prevent others from rising; by the fear that they lack ability to speak well; that they may make a mistake or be lost for words.
