Spiritual understanding, developed through the persistent study of Christian Science and daily obedience to its teachings, might be likened to the pearl of great price, referred to by the master Christian, Christ Jesus. Christian Scientists are today charged with the responsibility of displaying this pearl, showing its great value in their daily lives and in their church services and activities. The seeker for true light will then be drawn by their good works and exemplary Christian living to attend these services.
False beliefs of sin and sickness give way in the face of exemplary living of spiritual truths. This fact is pointed to by Mrs. Eddy in her book "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 126): "No reproof is so potent as the silent lesson of a good example. Works, more than words, should characterize Christian Scientists."
Should this admonition be overlooked, the limited display of the virtues of Christian Science in the lives and healing works of Christian Scientists might well result in reluctance on the part of outsiders to investigate Christian Science or turn to it for healing. We cannot avoid accepting this responsibility of following Jesus' example.
