At the age of ten I was living in bondage to asthma. Then Christian Science literature was given to my mother, who was expecting a child and had been told that she could never give birth to another child and live. From the testimonies in the Sentinel, I grasped that God is the only creator, that all He created is very good, and that to acknowledge any discordant condition is to disobey the First Commandment. One day when the symptoms of asthma appeared, I went as usual for the pills kept handy in the desk. Then I remembered what I had been reading, and with a sincere desire to be obedient, I turned my back on the pills, declaring, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3). It was as though a heavy weight had fallen from me, and I knew I was healed. The healing has been permanent.
My mother experienced harmonious childbirth. Soon all the children were attending a Christian Science Sunday School. Later my mother and I joined a branch church at the same time.
Later still, when I was in college, I refused the offer of a corn pad in the dormitory one day, saying with conviction, "God has healed other conditions, and He can heal this too." While I was speaking, the corns, one on each foot, fell off. I have never had corns since. This instantaneous healing came through gratitude for a dependable Principle.
