The Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy contains By-Laws designed to preserve the purity of Christian Science and to protect the student. The motive of these By-Laws is love. Of signal importance are those which ensure the correctness of Christian Science literature and which guide the student in his reading.

In Article IV, Section 1, Mrs. Eddy in her wisdom stipulates that the Bible, together with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and her other published works, shall be the only textbooks which the student shall use for self-instruction in Christian Science.

In Article VIII, Section 10, she prohibits a member from publishing (which means also circulating) profuse quotations from her copyrighted works and from plagiarizing her writings. The purpose of this By-Law is to prevent Christian Science from being adulterated. Another section of the same Article reads as follows:
