Inscribed on one side of the Boston Public Library are these words: "The Commonwealth requires the education of the people as the safeguard of order and liberty."
It is natural that one should wish to be well educated, and many young persons work diligently to win scholarships to colleges, while others have the means to attend schools of higher learning with little financial effort. It is indeed praiseworthy when one attains such high standing in his studies that he qualifies for a scholarship.
Someone may ask, What is a good education? In defining the word a dictionary includes this description: "Discipline of mind or character through study or instruction." Some people may think of education as instruction in the subjects which they hope will be useful in the line of work they expect to pursue.
