METAPHYSICAL SENSE OF ORBIT

From the November 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Great achievement in history has been the orbiting of a human being around the globe in a capsule with unthwarted speed, precision, control, and safety. Far greater, however, is the gaining of the spiritual, or metaphysical, sense of orbit. A dictionary definition of "orbit" reads, "The path in space along which a heavenly body moves about its center of attraction."

Christ Jesus demonstrated that the real selfhood of each individual forever moves in perfect accord with God, divine Mind, as a spiritual idea. Mrs. Eddy perceived that God, the Principle of being, is the central intelligence around which man revolves. God's man forever abides and moves in the infinite space of Spirit, held by the action of divine law in the path of spiritual illumination, purity, peace, goodness, and righteousness.

Mrs. Eddy uses the analogy of the sun and its planets to explain the relation of God and man, His formation. She states in Science and Health (p. 209), "Mind, supreme over all its formations and governing them all, is the central sun of its own systems of ideas, the life and light of all its own vast creation; and man is tributary to divine Mind." By letting this Mind govern him, the individual approximates his spiritual orbit and is at one with the resourcefulness, security, and continuity of his real being in God.
