THE PRACTICAL CHRISTIAN

From the November 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To describe a person as a practical Christian is highest praise. We think immediately of one who communes with God and practices the spiritual knowledge gained. We think of one who is faithful through trials, unspoiled by success, always ready to share his understanding with others. Christianity is far more than public worship. It is spiritual revelation, a way of life which must be followed unselfishly and consistently.

The founder of Christianity was the most practical Christian the world has ever known. The understanding of God which Jesus took into public places and social gatherings and which enabled him to perform what have been termed miracles was gained during periods of prayer. Sometimes he spent all night in prayer to God.

In the present age Mrs. Eddy, a New England woman, sought faithfully and found the eternally practical nature of the Master's teachings and named her discovery Christian Science. In the textbook she has restated in modern terms the truths of spiritual being and the laws through which they can be practiced today. Although Christian Science is quite generally thought of in connection with physical healing, this is but one aspect of its mission. When practiced consistently, it is a present salvation from all evils—mental, physical, and moral—and it acts as a law of protection from worldly conditions of every sort.
