MAN'S CONSCIOUS IDENTITY

From the February 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WHEN God revealed Himself to Moses on Mount Horeb as "I AM THAT I AM" (Ex. 3: 14), He was surely unfolding the understanding of Himself as the only self-conscious Being, or the one Ego. God had already told Moses, "Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain" (verse 12). From this statement, Moses must have had a glimpse of the intelligence and power which would animate him and enable him to accomplish all that was required to free the children of Israel from bondage.

Today Christian Science is again teaching that God is the only I am, the only Mind or Ego, and it reveals man's conscious identity as the reflection of all that is included in the one Ego and of nothing else. Mrs. Eddy states in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 258), "The name, I am, indicated no personality that could be paralleled with it; but it did declare a mighty individuality, even the everlasting Father, as infinite consciousness, ever-presence, omnipotence; as all law, Life, Truth, and Love."

It is evident that whatever is accepted in one's human consciousness determines his outward experiences. So, today, as we become conscious of the qualities which comprise the I am, we, like Moses, are animated by the intelligence, power, and ability to free ourselves and others from bondage to the physical senses and subjection to evil beliefs.
