STATUS SEEKING

From the February 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WE hear a great deal about status seeking these days. People seek to be, and often are, judged by the things they possess, wear, or display. These things are called status symbols.

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 239), "The objects we pursue and the spirit we manifest reveal our standpoint, and show what we are winning." Mrs. Eddy's life revealed the humility of a Christian standpoint. She once wrote (Miscellany, p. 306): "I have quite another purpose in life than to be thought great. Time and goodness determine greatness." And she concluded: "Human merit or demerit will find its proper level. Divinity alone solves the problem of humanity, and that in God's own time. 'By their fruits ye shall know them.' "

Among the "objects" which Mrs. Eddy pursued were spiritual qualities, such as understanding, love, wisdom, purity, holiness, health, and spiritual power. She also manifested moral force, appearing as kindness, honesty, faith, and meekness. Mrs. Eddy's status as a Christian was evident in her discovery of the Science of Christianity, with its restoration of Christian healing as Jesus practiced it. It is evident in her writings, including Science and Health, which completely states the Science she proved in her own practice. It is evident in the founding of the Christian Science movement, which protects and prospers her revelation of Truth.
