HARMONY IN CHURCH

From the April 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

HARMONIOUS tones coming from the church organ have often led my thought to the enjoyment of a richer appreciation of church members. By this I mean that individual notes, while ever remaining individual, lend their beauty to produce harmonious chords. Is this not symbolic of church members? In music each note is individual, useful, important. Its part is necessary to the whole harmonious effect. Each note may be enjoyed as a single one, but it is enjoyed more when it actively fits into the harmony of the whole theme. If one listens closely, he may detect the notes separately; but as they blend, they express harmony.

What is our reason for being church members? There is an infinite variety of experiences through which each one was led into Christian Science. But the object in uniting with the Church of Christ, Scientist, is quite likely the same for all of us. We love Christian Science, what it is and what it stands for, what it has done for us and for thousands of others. We want to be identified with it. Thus we join the Cause of Christian Science because it acknowledges God as the only Mind and because it honors Him by healing in His name. As we come to appreciate that each member really has the same reasons for being a member we cannot fail to experience greater harmony in church.

Mrs. Eddy defines "Church" in Science and Health as follows (p. 583):
