Mrs. Eddy, the revered Leader of the Christian Science movement, points out in her instructive article "Science of Mind-healing" in "No and Yes" the rich rewards of forbearance. She especially emphasizes forbearance in refraining from expressing error.
For example, she says (p. 8): "We should endeavor to be long-suffering, faithful, and charitable with all. To this small effort let us add one more privilege— namely, silence whenever it can substitute censure." And she continues, "Avoid voicing error; but utter the truth of God and the beauty of holiness, the joy of Love and 'the peace of God, that passeth all understanding,' recommending to all men fellowship in the bonds of Christ."
Forbearance is an indestructible link in the spiritually forged chain that binds men in true Christlike fellowship. Forbearance requires watchfulness. A stabilizing quality, forbearance establishes friendship on a permanent basis. It is the antidote for talebearing. It precludes silly gossip, the rehearsal of old wives' tales, baseless superstitions, unjust criticisms. When indulged, these evils contribute to strained or even temporarily ruptured human relationships. They are carnal in inception, childish in nature, and could be subtly destructive in intent.
