The instinct for freedom is deep in every human heart. Freedom is not something one gains through the exercise of the will or through mere intellectual proficiency. It is from God, divine Mind. It is inherent in man, made in God's likeness. Let us cultivate an attitude of expecting true freedom to be experienced by us as individuals and by all mankind.
Christ Jesus said with conviction born of spiritual power (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Being a captive of error comes from lack of knowing the truth, from ignorance of the real nature of God and man. Christ Jesus proved that captivity is mental, although appearing to be physical in most instances. He proved that through understanding God and His love for His children one can demonstrate true freedom now.
There are a number of references in the Bible stating that captivity has been led captive, has been turned or reversed, and that freedom has been experienced. We read (Deut. 30:3): "The Lord thy God will turn thy captivity"; and (Jer. 29: 14), "I will turn away your captivity"; and (Ps. 68:18), "Thou hast led captivity captive." The writers of these statements and of many others on the subject of freedom were men who had seen and in some instances had experienced physical captivity; yet the context of their writings shows that their concern was largely for spiritual freedom.
