SPONTANEOUS HEALING

From the May 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"What can I do for a baby with a temperature of 104 degrees?" asked a distressed neighbor at my door one noon. The young mother, looking anxiously at her child, expected a medical answer. But since all our children had been reared in Christian Science, having had no medical care whatsoever, I was unable to give her that kind of information. She then asked to use our telephone in order to consult a doctor, as up to this time she had given the child no medication.

I took the feverish baby in my arms. A wave of compassion for the child and the worried mother surged through me. Then there was an involuntary, spontaneous rising in rebellion against disease and so-Called laws of pain and fear for a baby and its mother. The awareness of the perfection and freedom of God's child was instantaneous. There was no argument, no premeditated declaration of Truth, no mental process, only an effortless, love-produced, warm, inward glow. The mother had not asked for Christian Science treatment, and none was given in the usual sense.

I gave the little one some crackers. He stopped crying and began at once to eat. When the mother returned from the telephone, he was eating and smiling. She was amazed. She told me she had tried everything she could think of to induce him to eat during the morning, but he had refused it all, continuing only to cry and toss feverishly. The perplexed mother carried him back to their apartment. A half hour later she joyously reported that the baby had eaten a normal meal and was entirely well.
