In Christian Science one discovers that thought is the determining factor of one's experience. Fear, poverty, sin, disease, and human discords of every nature are recognized in Science as erroneous states of thought, not as material circumstances. When one realizes that all that takes place in his life is the result of thinking, he perceives the mental nature of that which appears to the physical senses to be disease.
Human discords show that one is permitting his experience to be governed by carnal, or negative, thoughts. Health is a state of real consciousness. This fact is a basic teaching of Christian Science. Perfect health, true substance, and enduring harmony find expression in the life of one who allows his thought to be permeated with the infinite intelligence of omnipotent Mind, God.
Christian Science makes a clear distinction between the one infinite divine Mind, which Jesus so perfectly expressed, and the false, carnal mind, which erroneously suggests that life and intelligence, substance and health, are conditions which relate to flesh instead of thought. Paul wrote (Rom. 8:6), "To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."
