At the age of three weeks my daughter showed signs of a back defect. Upon having the child examined by physicians I was told that her back was imperfectly formed and that there were no nerves at all. X-ray pictures of the back were submitted to leading children's hospitals in the United States but with some misgivings on the part of local physicians, who explained that if there were no nerves there, the doctors could not help.
The response from the children's hospitals was the same as the verdict of the local physicians and was to the effect that the child would never sit up or feed herself. She would be sickly, catching cold easily; she would never control her bowels; she would never move her arms, and so on.
At this point my mother recommended help through Christian Science. After further exploration of medical and orthodox religious methods of help, I was told that they had nothing to offer, and I turned to Christian Science.
