HUMILITY AND SPIRITUAL PROGRESS

From the January 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Humility is one of the more gracious and admirable qualities one can possess. Mrs. Eddy states in Miscellany (p. 194), "Only those men and women gain greatness who gain themselves in a complete subordination of self."

A Christian Scientist finds it necessary to cultivate this quality in order to progress in the way of Life. Mrs. Eddy has given us much to ponder regarding qualities needed for spiritual progress. She says of humility in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 356): "One can never go up, until one has gone down in his own esteem. Humility is lens and prism to the understanding of Mind-healing; it must be had to understand our textbook; it is indispensable to personal growth, and points out the chart of its divine Principle and rule of practice." Then she advises, "Cherish humility, 'watch,' and 'pray without ceasing,' or you will miss the way of Truth and Love."

The humble mind is open to unfoldment, for it is devoid of egotism. And only where a limiting, finite sense of self is absent is it possible to awaken to the great spiritual resources and possibilities that lie ahead.
