SCIENTIFIC SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT

From the January 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To heal spiritually, we must discern the mental nature of physical circumstances as well as the truth that destroys false mental states. Christian Science teaches us how to discern spiritually and how to heal.

When Christ Jesus saw a woman "which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself" (Luke 13:11), he healed her. And when the ruler of the synagogue denounced him for healing on the Sabbath, he replied that Satan had bound her and asked, "Ought not this woman... be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?"

Satan, or evil, is the carnal mind—mortal mind—the supposed opposite of the one Mind, God. But God is All. There is no other Mind; therefore evil is unreal. Matter is what mortal mind thinks it sees in itself. Material conditions, therefore, are illusions. This is proved when, through an understanding of man as Mind's idea, spiritual and perfect, we discern the false, mental nature of a disease, affirm the truth of spiritual being and the nothingness of material belief, and heal the disease.
