What Jesus Did Was Scientific

From the November 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

From beginning to end Jesus' earthly experience was scientific in every respect. That is, it was the fulfillment of law. And he taught us that this same law is available to each one of us in this present day. The classification of his life as miraculous is part of the human mind's refusal to accept the responsibility of following him in the healing of sickness and sin. Since the discovery of Christian Science, there is no excuse for this blindness to the practical aspects of Jesus' teachings.

He said, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil."Matt. 5:17; And in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy tells us, "The mission of Jesus confirmed prophecy, and explained the so-called miracles of olden time as natural demonstrations of the divine power, demonstrations which were not understood."Science and Health, p. 131; Christian Science teaches that in order to understand the laws involved in spiritual healing and to demonstrate the power of God, we must be willing to change the basis of our thinking from matter to Spirit. As long as matter is the basis of scientific investigation, the realm and laws of Spirit will seem miraculous and the demonstrations of Jesus will not be comprehended.

Once we come to recognize that Spirit is substance, that the real universe is a universe of Spirit, and that man in God's likeness is spiritual, we shall begin to perceive the Science of being. Jesus mentioned this change of base when he said: "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. . . . That which is born of the Spirit is spirit."John 3:3, 6; And throughout his teaching and ministry he demonstrated the superiority of spiritual laws over the conditions of matter and so-called material life.
