Overcoming Aggressive Mental Suggestion

From the November 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Manual of The Mother Church our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, sets forth an important directive for her followers. It reads: "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind. By his works he shall be judged, —and justified or condemned."Man., Art. VIII, Sect. 6;

Christian Science explains that we handle aggressive mental suggestion by understanding its nothingness. Aggressive mental suggestion has its source in mortal mind, the false belief in a mind or power apart from God, the one and only Mind. The unreality of mortal mind is clearly seen when the allness of God, divine Mind, infinite Spirit, is acknowledged, understood, and firmly held to.

Because of its infinitude, divine Mind fills all space and is the only intelligence. Does this leave room for another so-called mind and its wrong thinking? The answer is evident. However, the sole intent of error, or mortal mind, is to make us believe that there is a mind, power, or existence apart from God, good. But error can have no reality for us unless we give it reality. When they are recognized as false, illusive, and delusive and are put out of thought, the falsehoods of error are rendered harmless and disappear.
