"Thou wilt light my candle"

From the November 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Psalmist sang, "Thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness."Ps. 18:28; Was not the Psalmist glimpsing something of his true spiritual identity? According to Christian Science, the lighting of the Psalmist's candle represents the coming to human consciousness of the Christ, the understanding of man's identity as spiritual, not material.

What does any candle do for us? Nothing, unless it is lighted. As the Lord our God lights our candle, we discern our true selfhood as the image and likeness of God. Through the earnest study of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, we learn of the allness of Spirit. Then we learn how we can demonstrate the power of Spirit over materiality. We discern the light of the spiritual qualities of the Christ, which casts out the darkness of negative thinking. As we recognize our true identity, we begin to find protection, health, abundant supply, and freedom from material limitation.

A Christian Scientist had searched for health through many weary weeks. Each day the darkness seemed more dense and real, the suffering more severe. Sleep was impossible. Despite the testimony of the material senses, the Christian Scientist stood fast in the faith that a clear understanding of her relationship with God would lead her out of darkness.
