Teaching in the Sunday School

From the December 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Manual of The Mother Church, Mrs. Eddy prescribes the teaching for children in Christian Science Sunday Schools. She writes, "The Sabbath School children shall be taught the Scriptures, and they shall be instructed according to their understanding or ability to grasp the simpler meanings of the divine Principle that they are taught." Man., Art. XX, Sect. 2;

Children who understand the divine Principle will have the ability to apply and demonstrate it. The Sunday School teacher should pray for guidance and inspiration in leading the pupils in the manner most effective for each.

Paul wrote, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." II Tim. 3:16; It is helpful, especially with the younger children, to have them memorize the portions of the Bible indicated in Section 3 of Article XX: the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer and its spiritual interpretation by Mrs. Eddy, and that part of the Sermon on the Mount usually called the Beatitudes. It is helpful too to encourage the older children to memorize sections of the Scriptures, such as the twenty-third and ninety-first Psalms, and individual verses which they will find helpful on specific occasions, for example, "All things work together for good to them that love God." Rom. 8:28;
