The Stranger Needs Our Love

From the December 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the book of Leviticus is this loving admonition to the Israelites: "When ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the Lord your God." Lev. 19:9,10;

That this is a directive from God is evident in a later verse from the same chapter, presented, perhaps, as a further reminder, "The stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God." v. 34;

What a reminder is this to students of Christian Science! Have they not themselves experienced the misfortunes of mortal existence and suffered the delusions of disease and other discordant conditions while "in the land of Egypt"? Have they not also been as "strangers" in the land of Israel, still in bondage to the enslaving beliefs of materialism and needing to glean spiritual harvests? But through the recognition of God as Life, Truth, and Love gained in the study of Christian Science they have perceived in some degree the nothingness of error, and healing has resulted.
