Is Man Material or Spiritual?

From the December 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the first chapter of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy gives the spiritual sense of the one brief prayer Jesus left to his followers. The first statement of this prayer is an affirmation of our divine sonship, "Our Father which art in heaven." Matt. 6:9; Mrs. Eddy interprets this verity as, "Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious."Science and Health, p. 16;

Christ Jesus demonstrated by his inspired words and marvelous works that he had a clearer understanding of man's relationship to God than anyone who has ever lived. His claiming of his divine sonship resulted in his glorious ministry, which to this day sets an example for all Christians. Those who were blessed by what Jesus knew saw their own sonship verified.

Jesus did not feel that his relationship to God was unique, for he directed us to pray, "Our Father." Our Father-Mother God is Spirit. Acknowledging Spirit as our origin, our one Parent, we perceive our true identity as spiritual. Because we are spiritual, we cannot include the opposite of Spirit, namely matter, which does not originate in Spirit. Anatomy, physiology, and psychology cannot define man; they define a material concept of man. The manifestation of God, Spirit, Mind, is man—man, constituted solely of spiritual ideas defined by Spirit, Mind.
