A PRAYER FOR CHRISTMAS

From the December 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Teach us, O Lord,
To know a true humility,
That, like the shepherds long ago,
When we shall hear Truth's angel voice,
We too shall rise and go
To seek its light.

Oh, let us learn
Of wisdom, and of constancy,
That, like the Wisemen, we shall see
The star of hope,
And let ourselves be led,
Unquestioning, across the shifting sands
To cast our earthly treasures down
Before the feet of Truth.

And show us now that Love
Reflected in a mother's face,
Which made a humble manger place
A shrine.
And fill us with that boundless joy
That sang from every starlit hill
And bade the earth be still
And know that Truth was born again.

Lord, this most humbly now we pray,
That we may be today
Like those who watched that starry night,
Receptive to Thy miracle
Of ever-dawning Truth and Life.
