I feel impelled to express my gratitude...

From the March 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I feel impelled to express my gratitude for what I owe to Christian Science. My outstanding experience was a remarkable escape in a motor accident.

I had a long journey to make on a day of heavy traffic. Being a very experienced driver, I was not normally bothered by-heavy traffic. However, on this occasion, there having been much talk of accidents, and being alone, I found myself from the very start repeating this sentence (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 496): "Hold perpetually this thought,—that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being." I realized that something more than the mere repetition of the words was necessary and that I must search out the real meaning and spirit of the passage. All this was a most unusual thing for me to do for so long a period.

After about two hours of this I was driving on a straight but undulating road. I was meeting a good deal of traffic coming toward me. Suddenly, as I approached the crest of a hill, I was faced with a car coming straight at me over the white line on the wrong side of the two-lane road as it overtook a line of slower cars traveling in the same direction as it was.
