Take Up the Cross and Wear the Crown

From the March 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Symbolism in Christian art has long been of interest. In the light of the centennial of the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy, the cross and crown, the Christian Science seal, has special meaning for followers of this religion today. The seal and a facsimile of the signature of our Leader are the registered trademarks of the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy.

The first edition of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, later entitled "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," was published in 1875 with no design on its cover. The second edition in 1878 bore an imprint in gold of a design of Noah's ark. But a drawing of an ark was not to be the permanent seal for the textbook. The third edition, published in 1881, was the first edition to have on the cover the imprint of the cross and crown.

What can the Scientist learn from the cross and crown, which is constantly in view in his daily study?
