What Church Are You Serving?

From the March 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As the second century of Christian Science begins, every student of this revelation may well consider what he is doing to further the Christian Science movement. One cannot receive the benefits of Christian Science like a sponge soaking up water. He must give of his substance like a star radiating light. He must give unselfishly of his thought, talents, patience, time, practical support, and love. Why? Because all the spiritual good that one can have is what he lives of it and gives of it.

Underlying this statement is a profound and glorious truth: it is the very nature of man to give, because it is the nature of man to express.

"Man is the expression of God's being," Science and Health, p. 470; Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." One meaning of "express" is "to portray, represent." Scientifically speaking, it is impossible for man to have any good that he doesn't express. All that man is or has is what he gives—what he radiates of God's nature. God's reflection is what man is, and that is all man is. One meaning of "reflect" is "to give out light."
