Sometimes the newcomer to Christian Science...

From the March 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes the newcomer to Christian Science becomes discouraged and fears his understanding is inadequate for his needs, and it is with the desire to encourage the beginner that I give this account of my early experiences in this Science.

About forty years ago my husband and I moved our family to a new city and rented a house across the street from a Church of Christ, Scientist. Neither of us had ever been inside a Christian Science church, and one Wednesday evening we walked across the street and attended our first testimony meeting. The testimonies made a deep impression on me, and a short time afterward I procured a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and began reading it—mostly from curiosity, for I loved the church in which I had been reared.

For some months before obtaining the copy of Science and Health, I had suffered from a series of sties on my eyelids, which were painful and which I had had lanced by a doctor. At the time I procured this book, I was again suffering from a very large sty, and at supper all the family spoke about the sty and said I must have it lanced the next day. Then they all went out for the evening, and I settled down to read my new book.
