From the May 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Church of Christ, Scientist, recognizes the right of the responsible citizen to obey the voice of his conscience in the performance of his civic, moral, and religious obligations. The denominational textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, states explicitly (p. 106): "God has endowed man with inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason, and conscience."

Among the members and adherents of this church are those who, after consulting reason and conscience, are: (1) willing to bear arms and take part as combatants in war; (2) unwilling for religious reasons to bear arms and take part as combatants in war. The church respects the rights of both these groups.
