A Question of Love

From the May 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many years ago, on the shores of the Galilean Sea, Christ Jesus asked Peter, "Lovest thou me more than these?"John 21:15;

Jesus asked this question after his resurrection from the grave. At that time it must have seemed that the continuance of his mission of bringing the healing Truth to all mankind depended on a handful of men. With his remarkable clarity of vision and infallible insight into human thought, Jesus knew that Peter in particular needed strengthening. So it was to him that he addressed the probing question, "Lovest thou me more than these?"

It was a poignant question. The work must be carried on out in the world with the Jews first and then with the Gentiles. The message was for time and eternity. Jesus knew what was required to carry out the mission: sacrifice, purity of thought, complete selflessness, deep spirituality, courage, and steadfast resolve.
