Truth—the Way of Liberation

From the May 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Throughout the ages humanity has been engaged in a struggle for freedom from its many yokes of bondage, from fear, sin, disease, want, oppression, and the myriad other evils that fetter it. However, let us consider two vital questions: Does humanity understand the nature of its bondage? Is it expending its efforts in the right direction in order to demonstrate freedom? The answer to these questions must be largely negative. While there has been some measure of progress, it becomes increasingly clear that except where these efforts are impelled by the Christ, the true idea of God, they are found to be quite fruitless.

In the Bible we find innumerable references to humanity's struggle to be free from lack and limitation, injustice and hate, from all forms of restriction. But also included in both the Old and New Testament is unmistakable evidence of the availability of a divine power equal to the task of healing and solving all manner of problems and even of guaranteeing immunity from them. The Bible makes clear that Christ Jesus is our Way shower, and a thorough study of his words and an examination of his works clearly indicate to us both the nature of human problems and how, through the Christ-power, we may obtain freedom from them.

Today this healing power is made available through the study and application of Christian Science, which explains the Christ as the way of redemption from evil. Mrs. Eddy writes, "The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation."Science and Health, Pref., p. xi; It is the power of Christ, the true idea of God, that liberates those who are in bondage to material sense.
