The sincere desire of every earnest student of Christian Science is to maintain steady spiritual progress each day, to turn increasingly away from materiality toward a greater consciousness of life as spiritual. A deeper understanding of God, Spirit, and of the real man's perfect relationship to Him is, of course, a basic objective. There is only one source of power and intelligence, and a student of Christian Science looks to immortal, divine Mind for his guidance. He knows that prayer is the means of this communication and that he must maintain purity of consciousness. He has learned to look beyond material objectives, for he understands the admonition of Christ Jesus: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."Matt. 6:33;
In Christian Science, prayer is a spiritualizing affirmation of man's at-one-ment with God. Our self abnegation and humble surrender to the omnipotence of Spirit is a necessary prelude to effective reception of divine guidance. This altitude of spiritual consciousness constitutes our receptivity to ever-available, divine goodness. It leads to answered prayer and indicates the vital importance of purging our consciousness daily of the impurities of materiality to ensure continued progress Godward. This hour to hour rejection and correction of mortal misconceptions requires disciplined thought and spiritual perception.
A good way to start our day is with prayer to the one, infinite God that we may express only that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus";Phil. 2:5; that this Mind may be our guiding light for the day, impelling and governing all our actions; that we may be fully aware that protection is ours as long as we remain obedient to the divine will; that divine Principle will dissolve all sinful thoughts; and that we shall share the heaven of divine consciousness with others through our reflection of Love. We then purify our thought through the study of the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly and of the Manual of The Mother Church both of which our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, wisely provided. Thus we gratefully make our contribution to this daily unification of thought throughout the world—a powerful influence for good.
