Overcoming Unrecognized False Gods

From the May 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every individual carries in thought certain controlling concepts which shape his actions and experience. Because of their dominant role they are in effect "gods," though they may not be concerned with any formal religion.

For example, one who accepts the thought that mathematics is difficult for him experiences restriction in that field, whereas those who believe otherwise enjoy facility. One who believes he is congenitally clumsy reflects his belief in uncoordinated action as long as it rules in his thought. One who considers himself handicapped because of deficiencies in rearing or education or family background, or because of racial inequalities, suffers from his belief until he perceives its essential falsity.

How important it is, and how logical and natural, for us to endeavor to remove any stumbling blocks and to fulfill our capacities as in reality the outcome of perfect Principle, God, the only possible activator and creator! But this can be done only on the basis of actual Truth. The mission of Christian Science is to unfold realism to humanity. Mrs. Eddy states, "The divine Principle, or Spirit, comprehends and expresses all, and all must therefore be as perfect as the divine Principle is perfect."Science and Health, p. 518;
