To Act Without Delay

From the May 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Those who have enjoyed the blessings and regeneration brought about through the application of Christian Science usually desire to express gratitude by rendering active service in the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, of which they are members. Sometimes, however, church members find that they have been persuaded by erroneous suggestions to believe that they must work out many adjustments and personal problems before they can feel free to take on certain church activities or additional responsibilities.

A student of Christian Science had been asked many times to take a Sunday School class but had always refused, basing her refusal on the belief that she was inexperienced, couldn't manage children, and lacked sufficient patience, understanding, and inspiration. She had often told herself that someday she would be ready to do this work, but not now; therefore her attitude had developed into a chronic acceptance of her seeming inadequacies and a tendency to postpone doing anything about them until some indefinite future time.

However, at a time when there was urgent need in her branch church for Sunday School teachers, the truth of Paul's words concerning salvation stirred her thought to a fresh outlook, "Behold, now is the accepted time." II Cor. 6:2; And she was suddenly conscious of an overwhelming desire to teach. Then she recalled Mrs. Eddy's words, "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds."Science and Health, p. 1; Her thoughts dwelt upon the times when mortal thinking had claimed that it was impossible for her to participate in some important church activity, but always her sincere desire to serve God first had opened the way to a clearer comprehension of her right place in the Cause of Christian Science. She felt that the desire to teach was a right desire; so again she earnestly sought God's guidance in refuting the arguments of human outlining.
