Justice and Mercy

From the January 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

With the advent of Christianity and then the founding of Christian Science, there has been a gradual amelioration of theology to the point where the nature of God is better understood; and the demonstration of this nature in human experience results in more equity, mercy, and healing love. In many instances in the Old Testament there is a concept of God that seems harsh in its justice and perhaps cruel in its implementation. Such events denoted an immature concept of God.

For instance, in the experience of Abraham there was a theological concept that demanded one's sacrifice of that which was most dear. Interpreted materially and literally, this resulted in the sacrifice of children; hence the urge to put Isaac on the altar. But honest prayer resulted in a higher concept coming to Abraham. This angel relieved his ignorance, lifted his theology, and saved the child.

Great changes took place when Christ Jesus brought the clearer idea of God as divine Love, showing the forgiveness and mercy of God as a vital element in his healing ministry. And Christian Science has appeared as the promised Comforter, further elucidating the nature of God, revealing the unreality of matter and evil, and thus bringing to light the scientific basis of healing and showing how mankind can be freed from limitation and suffering.
