Spiritual Inheritance versus Material Heredity

From the January 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

According to the latest theories it would appear that mortals are more or less programmed at birth like a computer. Christian Science reveals that the built-in information or so-called material intelligence which theoretically develops in a material body is the counterfeit of divine intelligence wherewith God creates His perfect spiritual idea, man.

If the material mind can claim to program the lives of all mortals, and therefore the material universe as a whole, it should not be considered a thing incredible for God, perfect Mind, the all-knowing and all-wise One, to have worked out and completed a universal, spiritual creation with everything in it, including man, absolutely perfect in every respect. And this is the creation described in the first chapter of Genesis. It is the reality of being that is right here where a material creation seems to be. Mrs. Eddy writes, "In proportion to our understanding of Christian Science, we are freed from the belief of heredity, of mind in matter or animal magnetism; and we disarm sin of its imaginary power in proportion to our spiritual understanding of the status of immortal being."Science and Health, p. 178;

The carnal mind's so-called programming employs misinformation from beginning to end. It is based on the false premises that man is a chemical compound, material instead of spiritual; that matter is real; that there can be intelligence and life in matter.
