In founding The Herald of Christian Science and providing for the translations of her writings, our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, indicated her approval of the translation of Christian Science literature. She was listening to God's voice, and He revealed to her this potent means of meeting humanity's need. Being herself an accomplished writer who had learned to choose her words with great care under God's guidance, Mrs. Eddy was aware of the importance of human language as an instrument of thought to communicate the truths of Christian Science to mankind effectively.
Perhaps it has never occurred to the reader to think of our Leader as a translator. But she was. Through Science she translated creation back into Spirit. She wrote under orders, as she herself tells us. She transcribed into a human tongue what was given to her from God and what she had realized and demonstrated of the true spiritual facts of being. That is why her writings, including their translations, have blessed and are continuing to bless countless thousands, healing the sick, reforming the sinner, comforting the sorrowful. Through the purity of her thought and its receptivity to the message God revealed to her, our Leader caught the spiritual import of this message and gave to this age Divine Science, the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus.
The same spiritual impetus led Mrs. Eddy to found the Christian Science periodicals. Her divinely inspired explanation of the mission of The Herald of Christian Science, founded by her in 1903, has become a symbol for the world-embracing activities of the Christian Science movement. Her words appear as an inscription on the cornice of The Christian Science Publishing Society and read: TO PROCLAIM THE UNIVERSAL ACTIVITY AND AVAILABILITY OF TRUTH. (See The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 353.) Here she expresses the wonderfully enlightening thought that the Christ, Truth, is not limited to one country or one language group but is the universal Comforter, available to all mankind.
