"Instead of the brier ... the myrtle"

From the October 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Today, more than ever before, it seems, mankind are concerned about the subject of abnormal physical growths. How like the lie of mortal, material mind to pervert the truth of God's creation with theories of disorderly and harmful growth! Growth as God causes it is orderly, symmetrical, beautiful, fruitful. Growth is progressive development.

In Christian Science we gain the true sense of growth. We see that the only genuine growth is lawful, the mandate of Mind. Our true growth and development is in consciousness. Daily through our study we gain new glimpses of the infinite God, and because we know that man is God's image and likeness, we at the same time gain some new glimpse of the truth of ourselves. Through this study and prayer our vision of our own identity grows. Our sphere of activity expands. Our obligation to exercise our newfound ability increases. Thus we go into each new day much as the tiny plant greets the sun, whose light and warmth in accord with the laws of nature require the plant to grow. And what an exciting, joyous promise that we shall continue to discover some new aspect of the divine and express that expansion in our existence!

In Genesis we read, "God made . . . every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew."Gen. 2:4, 5;Unlocking the meaning of this statement in Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy explains, "Here is the emphatic declaration that God creates all through Mind, not through matter,—that the plant grows, not because of seed or soil, but because growth is the eternal mandate of Mind."Science and Health, p.520; God is the infinite creator of all. He fills all space. His infinitude allows for no other power or presence. The Christian Scientist daily endeavors to keep his thought filled with the truth of God's infinity and to learn more of His beauty, variety, and completeness.
