The Church's Broad Responsibility in Handling Animal Magnetism

From the October 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Through the discovery by Mary Baker Eddy that Christianity as Jesus taught it is synonymous with Science, the pale star of primitive Christianity has now grown to full-orbed brilliance. The complete Science of Mind-healing is now enlightening the universe, available to free all mankind from the bondage of material sense, or animal magnetism. Mrs. Eddy writes, "The voice of God in behalf of the African slave was still echoing in our land, when the voice of the herald of this new crusade sounded the keynote of universal freedom, asking a fuller acknowledgment of the rights of man as a Son of God, demanding that the fetters of sin, sickness, and death be stricken from the human mind and that its freedom be won, not through human warfare, not with bayonet and blood, but through Christ's divine Science."Science and Health, p. 226;

It is the responsibility of the Church that has sprung up from the seeds of Mrs. Eddy's planting to carry this spiritual light of freedom to the far ends of the universe. This light of spiritual freedom is the law of annihilation to every form of mental and physical bondage that fetters mankind with imaginary shackles of limitation and frustration. It is the awesome responsibility of The Mother Church, through its myriad forms of activity, to usher in the millennium, the new heaven and new earth. Its work is to hold before mankind the new and full concept of God as Love, one omnipotent, all-powerful, all-present, all-active Deity, and of man as His full spiritual emanation and reflection. In the light of this truth there is no substance-matter, no darkness, no error of belief, and the action of this spiritual truth reveals the nothingness of any claim of error. The annihilation of all error through the revelation and demonstration of Truth is the Christly method of handling animal magnetism.

The eternality and omnipresence of Truth, glimpsed in part by prophets and seers down the time corridors of centuries, was finally proved in its completeness by Christ Jesus. The light of Jesus' teaching was effulgent. Even though his meaning was seen but dimly through the glass of material ignorance and narrow-mindedness by the people of that age, the basic element of freedom contained in his words startled and aroused the western world. Even Rome could not destroy that freedom.
