Overcoming the Subtlety of Negativeness

From the October 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

All that stands for God proclaims the positive. Mrs. Eddy tells us: "Spirit is positive. Matter is Spirit's contrary, the absence of Spirit. For positive Spirit to pass through a negative condition would be Spirit's destruction."Science and Health, p. 173; We find that the positive is defined by the use of such words as absolute, real, affirmative, constructive; while the negative is the opposite, that which denies reality.

There are individuals who approach each day negatively, taking a restrictive or a reverse view of everything. Even when the sun is shining, flowers are blooming, and soft breezes blowing, they are reluctant to admit it is a beautiful day. They are sure that over the horizon a storm is brewing and may come shortly. One can readily see what this attitude of thought would do to undermine one's grasp of Christian Science and the demonstrating of its vital truths. It is sheer undetected animal magnetism subtly arguing for the negative in the midst of our endeavors to bring out the positive—even perhaps delaying a healing that is needed.

No wonder there is confusion when this habit is allowed to pass uncorrected! We must declare for the positive from the start if we expect to demonstrate Science. Does not Mrs. Eddy remind us often that the decisions we make determine our future course? We make these decisions with every thought, and we must make them wisely and scientifically on the side of divine Principle. There are no halfway measures in our Leader's reminders. They are direct, forthright, defeatless!
