I could easily fill a sizable book with accounts of healings and blessings bestowed upon me during the past half century through the study and application of Christian Science.
It was during a raging, tropical typhoon on the island of Guam, when I was a bride, that I first felt the need of knowing how to pray. Our house had blown away, and we were out in the open without protection. I knew I should pray for our safety, but how to do this I knew not. I remember feeling a great sense of shame in realizing this. I had joined a Protestant church in my pre-teens but had only been taught about finding good at some future time in a place known as heaven, and at that moment I desperately needed God's help. I vowed then and there that if my life was spared I would learn how to pray in an intelligent way. My desire was answered shortly thereafter when Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy came into my possession. When I read the chapter on Prayer, my heart sang for joy, for it gave me my answer.
I put the book aside at that time, for I was to sail from Guam to visit relatives in the Philippines, with the hope of getting into the mountain coolness of Baguio. Upon arrival in the Philippines, I became too ill for further travel because of pregnancy, and my relatives were alarmed at the seriousness of my condition. While they were not Christian Scientists themselves, they urged me to turn to a Christian Science practitioner for help. I telephoned a practitioner but, much to my disappointment, she insisted that I come to her home in Manila. My sister-in-law assisted me there by taxi. It seemed a very difficult trip because of my extreme weakness. I was quite resentful at having to go to the practitioner in my illness instead of her coming to me.
